Penicillamine 250mg Capsules is used to treat severe and active rheumatoid arthritis (autoimmune disease) in patients who have not responded to conventional therapy. Penicillamine belongs to a group of medicines called disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Penicillamine is an immunosuppressant that works by suppressing the activity of the immune system and this helps decrease the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis such as pain and swelling.
Penicillamine is also classified as a chelating (metal-binding) agent and is used to remove excess copper levels in patients with Wilson’s disease, a genetic disorder. In the treatment of Wilson’s disease, Penicillamine works by binding to accumulated copper in the body and eliminating it through urine.
